ENVS 2210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Royal Jelly, Ecdysone, Pupa
Document Summary
The class insecta has subclasses, the holometabola and the hemimetabola . Holometabolous insects because they pass through complete metamorphosis (transformation). The first three stages are known as brood . Worker bees will feed the larvae with royal jelly (produced in the gland in the head) Not all insects do this: bumble bees lay eggs on pollen grain, so when they hatch they feed themselves. Worker will eventually cap the cell with wax (contain small holes to breath) Egg: 3 days for the three castes. Larva: 5. 5, 6 and 6. 5 days for queen, worker and drone, respectively. Pupa: 7, 12 and 14. 5 days for queen, worker and drone, respectively. 16, 21, 24 for queen, worker, and drone. Queene develop faster because they are constantly fed with royal jelly. The egg. the egg contains an embryo and nutrients for its development. Interior: cytoplasm, nucleus, yolk (the protein used to feed the embryo)
