Document Summary

Unit 4 foraging and reproduction at the individual level: queens and mating. Water collection: water is used in honey bee colonies to cool the hive during hot days, used to dilute honey for feeding purposes, bees transport water in their honey stomachs. Reproductive castes drones and queens: reared during the spring at a highly skewed sex ratio in favour of males, 5000-20,000 males but only 10 queens. If they do not, they start building queen cells by enlarging cells of young larvae. If multiple queens are reared, the queens hatch and immediately search for potential rivals. If a queen finds a rival, she stings them to death: new queen is ready to mate within 6-13 days after emergence. Immediately after, another drone can mate with the queen: this process is repeated several times (up to 40 times, following mating, a queen"s ovaries develop and she begins to lay eggs within two to five days.
