Lec 29 design barns for emerg prevention people: you, clients, owners, managers horses: their comfort land: topography, soils, etc good planning will prevent emergencies, keep horses and people happy. Time: want barn to last over time. During construction project, what will you do if there is an emergand how will you deal. Causes of fires: electrical (#1 cause of barn demolitions), vehicles, hay/bedding (bank barns useful bc keeps warm, easy access but better to keep in sep building), spill (diesel, oil) Trees need 30% extra space more than just its branches around it as a zone . Loose canons: injuries from loose dogs, kids, etc if close to road hv perimeter fence. Mep: mechanical, electrical and plumbing (lights, pumps, fans). When its -30 will pipes freeze and blow?s. Circulation within the barn (hallways, how things can moves etc) If doing it yourself, get it checked by someone who knows horse barn design.
