EQN 3050 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Epithelium, Helicobacter Pylori, Prostaglandin E2
Document Summary
Eqn 3050 - lecture 16 - march 8/18. Equine stomach: continuously secretes gastric juices, even during periods of fasting. Daily secretions are around 10-30l daily: a large portion of the equine stomach is lined with squamous vs glandular epithelium. The squamous portion of the stomach lacks the protection of mucus secretions and thus is highly vulnerable to erosion from hcl. Division between proximal and distal ends is called margo plicatus colour difference between glandular and non glandular portions. Gastric ulcers: mucosa very easily damaged, up to 93% of racehorses, almost 60% of foals, reduced performance; reduced absorption, poor haircoat/attitude, can increase vulnerability to colic. The way we diagnose it is through a gastric endoscopy ; looking for number of ulvers and severity of ulcers. Risk factors: changes in diet, high grain/low forage diet ; increased transit time so stomach is empty for longer with grains increased acidity too .
