Conflict, stress and abuse: 2 people can have 2 different memories of an event. Begins with different perception=difference in encoding: people can remember what they did, not other - egocentric bias. Accept that there is no true version of what happened shouldn"t assume partner is lying- might just being remembering it differently: ex people don"t remember having sex with partner. Behaviours intended to manage or resolve conflict: can reduce conflict or escalate it. Strategic choice: partner has a choice in where they respond in a conflict, choices may not be informed foresight, choices may also be from guesswork, mindlessness or habit. Factors that explain why partners choose one strategy over another: situation factors- third parties-outside of relationship-friends family, structural relationships- gender roles. Department of justice canada definition includes many different forms of abuse. The definition of family violence will continue to change- family abuse will also change.
