Document Summary
Gender: the psychological state of being female or male, distinct form of anatomic sex. Gender typing: the process by which children acquire behaviours deemed appropriate for their sex. Sexual differentiation: the process by which males and females develop distinct reproductive anatomy. Aristotle falsely believed that the difference between males and females was that male semen was hot and women semen was cold. Embryo: the stage of prenatal development that begins with implantation of a fertilized egg and concludes with development of major organ systems. After the 7th week of conception, the genetic code (xx, xy) begins to assert itself, causing changes in the gonads. The basic blueprint of the human embryo is female (x) and the y chromosome causes the embryo to deviate from the female developmental course. Androgens: male sex hormones (most important androgen is testosterone) Wolffian duct develops into an epididymis, vas deferens and seminal vesicle. Mullerian ducts develop into fallopian tubes, the uterus and of the vagina.
