Document Summary
Week 10: preliminary findings from a public deliberative sessions with older. Most common definition focuses on a lack of disease or disability (rowe & Khan: based on this definition many people would not be considered to be aging successfully. Various ways of representing aging exist: individualist assumptions, aging as a decline, defining successful aging on behalf of older adults. Studies also highlight the homogenization of older adults as group: through expectations for physical appearance, by reminders of physical deterioration, mortality and transient nature of self-worth. Older adults are often judged on their physical appearance: particularly true for older women, either seen as invisible or grotesque for trying to remain young. Studies point to the notion of consumerism as a means to maintain a youthful look and opt out of aging. Aging successfully is said to be an individual responsibility and one"s public.
