Children"s development during middle childhood is relatively steady, although it increases in complexity as their social environment expands to include more socio-cultural contexts. Children continue to make significant annual gains height/ weight during this period. Nutrition continues to play a key role in healthy physical development, especially in north america where obesity is becoming a greater concern at earlier ages. Physical activity plays important role in helping children maintain a healthy weight, among other health benefits ( food insecurity is an important issue for many canadian children) According to statistics canada, 2007 & 2008, 7. 7% (or 961,000) of canadian households experienced compromises in the quality of food consumed or reduction in food intake because of insufficient funds. Households w/ children under age of 12 are among those most at risk for food insecurity. Inadequate nutrition is associated w/ mental health disorders, such as depression and behavioral problems.
