Lives focus on family and work: both of these areas are in transition at this time. Women"s relationship with family is often different than men"s: more intimately associated with nurturing and childrearing tasks. Most women in this age range are at work. Women"s experience of aging is different than men"s: includes the experience of menopause, women considered old before men. Couples renew their marriages and work out new arrangements. May lead to an increase in sex: more time, more freedom, more privacy, no fear of pregnancy. Empty nest: launching: when children leave home, delayed launching = decreased satisfaction. The relationship with their children changes as the children move from adolescence into young adulthood. Now that the pair is alone: must * their couple system as a dyad, or pair, rather than as part of a larger family.
