Chapter 7 the middle years of the family and the not-so-empty nest. Chapter 8 grey power and the sunset years. Stressor: a life event that can produce change in the family system: example: parenthood, death or financial problems. Later adolescence: at this time, an individual develops mature attachment, independence, initiative and employment and if this does not happen they experience identity confusion. When events such as retirement and grandparenthood come at expected ages, they can be prepared for and are more acceptable. Growing older is a physical inevitability, but the social context has an important influence on how individuals and their families experience aging. Most experts now see three sets of old age. The "old=old": 85: many of the variations among individuals have more to do with physical and psychological functioning than with chronological age, decisions and events that occur earlier in life can also play a role. Chronological age: the number of years a person has lived.
