Often use gps location to find other nearby users. By 2014 in big cities people were using tinder as a serious use: taken less seriously at first, used by people 24-30 on average. Making people shallow: judging people on their photos rather than their personality. No less shallow than we already are. Apps makes dating feel more hypothetical: more willing to say no online than in person, might dismiss a potential perfect partner based on prejudgement. Japan: online dating is not very popular, dating crisis, organised group dates. Snapchat helps with that because the photo is temporary. Advantages: greater control about how to present ourselves. Taking time to respond perfectly: reduces issues with time, space, and distance. Meeting someone on the other side of the province/country/world. Allows for people with busy schedules to date: creates sense of ambient intimacy, increased self reflection. Green highlight on final: safe space for marginalized persons.
