Physical Growth
• 6 to 12 years: weight doubles, height increases by 45cm
• 3.5 kg, 7.5 cm/year
• Boys = girls
• Puberty: girls > boys
o Girls start to get taller
Nutrition
• 2400 cal/day
• Need breakfast
• Chronic malnutrition
o Slowed growth, irritability, sickness, missed school, decreased concentration and
remembering
• Obesity: 20% over ideal weight
o High blood pressure, diabetes
• Need to evaluate eating habits
• Poor nutritional knowledge – schools adding curriculum
• Involving parents in educational programs in nutrition with child – most effective in child obesity
• Limited resources to meet nutritional needs
Obesity
• Tv
o Snacking while watching
o Bombarded with commercials
o Burn fewer calories
Nutrition and Self-Esteem
• Not weight but how child feels about their appearance
• Participate in organized and unorganized sports
Teeth
• Start to loose teeth
o 4 per year for 5 years
• 12 years: 24 teeth, 4 molars
• Early tooth decay can affect next teeth
Motor Development
• Boys > girls
o Gross, especially with strength
• Girls > boys
o Fine motor (handwriting)
