Parenting styles: demandingness dimension: parental demandingness (behavioural control), the claims parents make on children to become integrated into the family whole, by their maturity demands, supervision, disciplinary efforts and willingness to confront the child who disobeys. Indulgent/permissive parents: more responsive than demanding, do not require mature behaviour, avoid confrontation. Characteristics of the four parenting styles: authoritarian: authoritarian, highly demanding and directive, not responsive, expect their orders to be obeyed without explanation, expect their children to accept their judgements, values and goals without questioning. Overprotective parents: children may acquiesce or resist. Strict as well as very close and supportive: traditional parenting, racial socialization: important component of tradition parenting patterns, consideration of unique protective factors, extended family relations, associated with positive outcomes, ethnic diversity.
