Individuals are selected one at a time with each individual being replaced before the next is sampled: each selection has the exact same probability of being selected, sampling without replacement. I. e. , the population is divided into subgroups (or strata) and random sampling techniques are then used to select sample members from each stratum. Added bonus that the strata will accurately reflect the numerical compositions of various subgroups (e. g. , number of males in department): cluster sampling.
