Document Summary

Descriptive non-experimental: observational method, case study method, survey method. Predictive non-experimental: correlational method, quasi-experimental method. Researchers are often interested in the way individuals change as a function of age. Two methods for investigating topics in which one of the major variables is age: cross-sectional methods, longitudinal methods. Note that this could be an experimental task or might be more of a quasi- experimental design. In this method, the same group of people are observed at different points in time as they grow older. Longtitudinal methods are more expensive and time consuming than cross sectional designs. Researchers must pay attention to mortality in longitudinal designs (who drops out and why?) Although cross-sectional designs are more common, they are more susceptible to a cohort effect: differences between groups in cross-sectional studies might be due to differences between generations rather than chronological age. E. g. ability to navigate the internet decreases with age. Combine the features of cross-sectional designs with longitudinal designs.
