The severity and the number of diseases equal the lower ones ses** Mortality rates -> what age do people die. Look at this as a function of social gradient. 2 major health problems illustrate the social determinants of health: the social gradient in disease, and the striking differences in life expectancy between the countries of western europe and those of central and eastern europe. Can the organization of work, degree of social isolation and sense of control over work affect health. Factors in the environment affect the central nervous system, and may then lead to ill health. Involves nervous system and several hormonal or endocrine transmitters. Receives sensory information and then brain has to make sense of it. 2nd pathway: comes into operation minuets/hour later ex: person can become more vigilant.
