FRHD 3150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Reinforcement, Tachypnea, Classical Conditioning
Operant and Respondent Combined
• Experiences often include both respondent and operant conditioning occurring concurrently
Emotions
• Because emotions are associated with rewards and punishments, respondent conditioning may
pair the reward or punishment with an emotion that further influences learning
What are Emotions?
• Sensations
o The psychological reaction one feels during an experience
▪ Racing heart
▪ Rapid breathing
▪ Sweating
• Expressions
o Outward expression of those sensations
▪ Clenching your hands
▪ Pursing lips
• Interpretations
o How the sensations and expressions are interpreted and understood by the individual
Examples
• Positive reinforcement
o Happiness
• Negative reinforcement
o Relief
• Positive punishment
o Anxiety
• Negative punishment
o Anger
Cognitions/Thinking
• Self-talk
• Operant
o You learn to se self-talk
o Learn to make self-talk sub-vocal
• Respondent
o Self-talk messages are paired with emotions
Generalization
• Stimulus generalization
• Response generalization

Document Summary
Operant and respondent combined: experiences often include both respondent and operant conditioning occurring concurrently. Emotions: because emotions are associated with rewards and punishments, respondent conditioning may pair the reward or punishment with an emotion that further influences learning. What are emotions: sensations, the psychological reaction one feels during an experience, racing heart, rapid breathing, sweating, expressions, outward expression of those sensations, clenching your hands, pursing lips. Interpretations: how the sensations and expressions are interpreted and understood by the individual. Examples: positive reinforcement, happiness, negative reinforcement, relief, positive punishment, anxiety, negative punishment, anger. Cognitions/thinking: self-talk, operant, you learn to se self-talk, learn to make self-talk sub-vocal, respondent, self-talk messages are paired with emotions.
