FRHD 3400 Lecture 9: Week 9: Empathic Conforntation, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Document Summary
Empathic confrontation uses clarification and supportive challenge in a nonjudgmental manner. Help minimize resistance and facilitate creativity, growth, and development. Identify conflict, incongruity, discrepancies, ambivalence, and mixed messages in behaviour, thought, and feeling/emotions. Encourage and facilitate exploration and creative resolution of conflict discrepancies. Evaluate client creative change processes occurring during the session and throughout treatment sessions, using the client change scale. Consider multicultural and individual differences when using confrontation. Empathic confrontation is a more gentle skill, than challenging. Involves listening to the client carefully and respectfully; and then seeking to help the client examine self or situation more fully. Empathic confrontation is not a direct, harsh challenge. Clients will become quiet and will not want to take risks: clients will shut down, might decide to not come back. Part of successful therapy is challenging and appropriate client confrontation. * none of us just jump into changing, it takes time and steps.
