Suzanne is 13 years of age and has come to you for support because she is pregnant.
She is not sure what to do and it is clear that she is in crisis.
But she does not want you to tell her parents. She says they will kill her if they find
out.
She is under legal age for sexual behaviour- person who she had sex with can be
charged for criminal assault
Also under legal age for abortion
Phone children’s aid society
What would you do?
oIf person is competent to say no, it is informed consent
oTell her that I cannot make that promise
oReview consent form- send them intake doc and informed consent form (tell
them to bring it and sign it in front of me)
oCan work with you, let’s talk about telling your parents and not telling your
parents
Client’s best interests
In making ethical decisions, as much as possible, include the client in this process (with
the exception of safety concerns)
What is paramount is that clients receive the best help that is available even if this may
not be what
Keep the best interest of the client in mind
Do no harm within the social context of helping.”
Ethics in the Helping Process
Ethics: Observe and practice ethically and follow professional standards. Particularly
important issues for beginning interviewers are competence, informed consent,
confidentiality, power, and social justice.
Predicted result: Client trust and understanding of the interviewing process will increase.
Client will feel empowered in more egalitarian session. When you work toward social
justice, you contribute to problem prevention in addition to healing work in the interview.
The helping professions have developed codes of ethics that are designed to protect the
client and help ensure that interviewers, counselors, and therapists follow appropriate
practices.

Keep good practice
Protect clients
Safeguard their autonomy
