Food chain: a sequence of organism in an ecosystem, each eating or decomposing its prey. Greater amounts of incoming energy than there are out going so that there can be life. The energy gets lost as you go up the food chain. If you get rid of one item in the food chain then there will have to be alternatives. Simplification: reduction of the biodiversity of an ecosystem (an extreme form of substitution) Bioaccumulation: the build-up of contaminates over time in an organism. Bio magnification: occurs when contaminates are passed up the food chain and concentrated along the route.
