Modification of the flood plan and flow patterns. Change in storage = precipitation storage (trees, groundwater table, etc. ) Drainage basin (watershed): the upstream area from which surface water flows towards the channel. Drainage divide: topographic line or boundary separating watersheds. Time 0 of a storm infiltration rates are high and run off is quite low. As infiltration rates increase, run off rates decreases. As infiltration rates decrease, run off rates increase. Example: parking lots have low infiltration (impervious surface) = immediate run off. Example: fields have high infiltration = slower run off. Measuring the amount of water is about volume. Hydrograph: measure of water over a period of time. Hydrographs require input (i. e. rainfall), units per discharge, and units per time.
