Document Summary

Shows location and attributes of a feature. Began using transparent "overlays" (on tracing paper) for battles, the railway, mapping infection relatively easy/ inexpensive to read and interpret etc. Could use a generic map, and then plot various different things on overlays which could then be combined and compared on the map. Many limitations; - original data had to be classified to reduce volume. Must be drawn extremely accurately (still true, but easier with computers) Multiple map sheets causes a huge data storage issue. Difficult and expensive to store and retrieve this huge physical data set. Printed map is static very difficult to update or change afterwards. Make and update maps more quickly and cheaply. Maps can be made for specific users (since more maps can be made) Don"t need skilled staff to create maps as the computer does this. Create maps that is difficult to create by had (3d, interactive etc)
