GEOG 3000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Water Aeration, Endorheic Basin, Bedform
Document Summary
Aquatic habitats (chapter 6) flow itself can create very different systems: affects type of vegetation, slope and discharge determine sediment, affects the species that appear there. Low stream flow: meandering, higher sediment loads, leads to higher vegetation growth to submerged vegetation. Stagnant water: phosphorus limiting for algae, leading to dead zones in water, limiting life. Endorheic basins: water only flows into the basin (closed basin), and ust evaporate to exit: can lead to saline lakes and limited vegetation. Benthic zone: lowest level in the water body where vegetation resides: seaweed etc. Benthic organisms: crabs etc: factors affecting invertebrate populations, stream hydraulics, food availability, temperature, water quality. Stream hydraulics: stream flow deteriines, turbidity: cloudiness of water, oxygenation. Coarse, poorly sorted sediments area associated with high diversity in benthic zones: due to various grain sizes, bed more stable in the long therm.
