Week 2 The First World WarGavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on June 28th 1914 sparking WW1 the war that eventually collapsed EuropePrincip was part of a terrorist organization called the Black Hand AustriaHungary declared war on Serbia who they believed supported the Black Hand Because of this Russia quickly joined the war in Serbias defense Therefore Germany declared war on Russia in to defend AustriaHungary Then the French declared war on Germany to defend RussiaThe Schleiffen Plan was germanys plan to avoid a 2front war after France joined the war They did this by attacking France through Belgium to catch the French off guard Then quickly move East before Russia can completely mobilizeHowever Germans going through Belgium made the British angry because Belgium was supposed to be neutral This cause the British to join the war on the side of the Triple EntenteIn contrast to the German plan France defeated Germany in Belgiums Marne River and the Russians mobiliz
