Bottom of ocean, mysteries: could change things and society for the better. many things that happened in 1900 s/20th century questioned notion that we are always progressing: could improve on material, social, and political life. many people believed history to be scientific-could analyze past/ Industrial revolution: mechanization of industries, resulting in: rise of cities and decline of the village.
