HIST 1250 November 6, 2012 (16) Sigmund Freud and the Unconscious - A physician in Vienna serving middle and high class people - Specializes in phycology - At this point most people think there is no cure for physiological diseases - Puts great importance of childhood traumas, as well as sexual traumas - He tries to find out what causes his patients to have certain problems - In 1908 he rights Civilized Sexual Morality and Modern Nervousness which is shocking for the time, talks about sexually oppressed woman Nineteenth Century Physics - The idea that physics is so important doesn’t exist until this point; physicist isn’t a word in the English language until the 1940s - The Michelson-Morley experiment is to detect ether - In 1905 Einstein publishes his theory on Special Relativity (see slide for details) -
