Document Summary

The dates are rather vague, there is not the precision in dating we have come to expect in the. West, as much of buddhist history in its documentary aspect is legendary, rather than historically sound. Buddhism grew out of hinduism in the 6th century b. c - as such, it shared much of the fundamental religious views of hinduism, yet it was also a reaction against the hinduism of its day. When siddhartha was a young infant his father kept his sheltered from the world outside deep within their kingdom in nepal. Firstly, he lived as an ascetic in the style of hindu holiness, then adopted what came to be called the middle way, neither too ascetic nor too self indulgent. While meditating under a bodhi tree in bodh gaya, he attained enlightenment - from this time on he became known as the buddha meaning the enlightened one.
