Document Summary

Lecture 1 intro to course & european expansion. 1867 is only the beginning of confederation, when 4 colonies joined together in a political union; confederation continues into the 20th/21st centuries. Division of canadian history is a debated issue, when confederation begins/ends and what it means. 4 themes will be addressed in this course: diversity, modernization/historical development (only with hindsight), change in continuity (great events changing lives), and environment. Age of expansion is the period where individuals began travelling and further away from europe; when they encountered things they didn"t believe were government they felt it was their right to claim that territory. Europe was a diverse place with a series of highly structured societies in 1000, europe was 38 million, by 1300 europe was 70 million in population; evidently there was expansion. Previous to this there was viking expansion 8th to 11th centuries, expanding into russia, mediterranean, na, greenland, iceland, etc: leif erikson and the l"anse aux meadows settlement.
