Nothing was inevitable about canada forming into a country. They were politically organizing a structure, but canada could have formed in different ways. Canadians, but they chose confederation because it was inevitable. They liked trade, but as britain became a free trade colony, the british said that they really need. Canada, all tariffs they had on canadian goods were cut down. In 1849 push for annexation to the united states because the loss of the british market, meant that they needed to find a replacement. Small investors in london had money in canadian stocks and they wanted a stronger government so they put pressure on the british government and to secure their investments. The american threat also was big to canada because they had the whole civil war thing going on over there. The civil war broke out over states rights one of them being slavery.
