Document Summary

Fronde = other institutions looking to keep the king from centralising power too much and take over themselves. Thought to very dangerous by the monarchy, king had to flee from castle to castle as he was chased by armies of the aristocrats constantly. When you try to fight something and you lose, your position gets vastly discredited. Louis won over the frondes and competing entities. Louis xiv decided to personally rule france and all its colonies - l"etat, c"est moi! Louis never really had absolute authority even though he was an absolutist ruler. Based on the theory of "divine right of kings" - god gave him the right to rule. Meant to be impressive, highlighted the king"s luxuriousness and glory. Decided that protestants no longer had religious freedoms. People still practiced though, they just had to hide it. Colonies were an embarrassment to the king because they were small and bad representations of france in the king"s mind.
