Islands and controlling them is very important in the 14th century for ships and repairs and stuff. This is why byzantines and romans wanted sicily. Naval battles and domination of islands was very culturally important. Genoese were interested in what could be produced on islands. Biggest commodity was wool and woolen cloth in middle ages. If you were a noble man you needed dyed woolen cloth because most stuff was died brown or black. Same dyes used for cloths were used for inks and art.
