France remained catholic until the french revolution of 1789, france experimented with atheism as a national religion. Today france has no official creed, religious belief is rare but if it occurs it is usually catholic or muslim but catholic holidays are still observed. The concordat of bologna 1516 was just to affirm the clergy should pay taxes to. By 1560 more than half of the nobility was protestant and more of the general population was. Frances wars of religion were fought over theses religious issue"s (protestant population vs control of catholic church) in 1562 until 1594.
