Archival historians = historians who use archives - not all historians are archival historians (ex those working in more modern periods) Not everything in archives are in the public domain: A deposit places a material into the archive but restricts access to it from the general public. An accession is historic material donated to an archive for all to access. Humans, more so than ever now, are obsessed with generating and archiving information about ourselves (modern day ex. We engage in both conscious and unconscious archiving. From around the 18th century, archives began to be preserved. Archives nationale - founded by the french government during the french revolution to establish a place that would hold government records. The old government had withheld all government records, information from the citizenry therefore with the demise of the old regime and rise of the new france now wanted a national archive for the people.
