Canada would emerge from ww1 more divided between english and french. English canada wanted to be involved more and wanted to support the motherland through the conflict whereas french canadians thought more inwardly and towards french-canadian nationalism. If canada "became a nation" through ww1, it definitely came at immense loss. Almost 1 in 10 canadians went off to europe to fight - and of those who left, 1 in 10 lost their lives on the battlefields. Canada"s entire population was only 8 million large at this point too. Franz ferdinand and wife were assassinated in serbia causing the austria- Hungarian empire to declare war against serbia invoking german support (inversely, russia mobilized to help serbia) Russia and france had an agreement to come to each other"s aid. Great britain became involved as german readied to invade the neutral country of belgium. Italy, romania and the united states joined the allied side.
