Look at slides under sunni/shi"i schism for family tree. Fatimids will move east to egypt, establish themselves, and found cairo in late 10th century. Differentiation of shi"ite communities into separate minority populations: imami 12"er shi"ism: iran, iraq, lebanon, 5"er zaydis: yemen, arabian peninsula, 7"er ismailis. Aga khan and diaspora communities today: idrisid dynasty in morocco, 8th-10th centuries, turkish alevis in anatolia (descendants of kizilbas turkmen in safavid iran, nusayris: alawis in coastal syria, babi movement in mid-19th century qajar persia. Pre-cursor to the baha"i movement, mid-19th century persia but now worldwide: hazaras in central afghanistan.
