Was very different from the european version of feudalism. Yamato = great harmony they were descended from the sun goddess amaterasu: ameratsu sent her grandson down to rule japan in 660bc, thus the figure of the sun plays a large part in japanese life and propaganda. The emperor and the imperial family were beyond the clouds and were essentially a figurehead and weren"t the ones really in political power. Rather the nation was ruled by a shogun: shogun = great general. Kyoto: where the imperial family lived, more of a religious importance than political. Began the tokugawa period which lasted from 1603-1868. The tokugawa set themselves up so that they could have most of the power and so they controlled 25% of the land in japan at the time. Bakufu (military government: 4-5 of the shoguns closest advisors right up there with the shogun.
