This is rough country justice = not waiting for the authorities to take action. 1)torture after someone found guilty - part of punishment. 2)torture used to find out if someone was guilty or innocent. Both can be symbolic : rituals intended to show good over evil (burning) Burning form of torture that reached its peak during the witch hunts. Treason : plot against the god and crown. Charivari and skimmington rides- community policing, rough justice, vigilantism, humiliation ritual (by the community)
