Symbolic function of torture: good over evil, god over sinners, state over individual (common good) Torture: a measure of pain: few out of sight out of mind prisons, visual representation of the struggle over good and evil. Judicial changes: witch statutes repeated, more writings in terms of an attempt to create laws, confessions under torture are not valuable anymore. New mental look: skepticism dethrones satan, scientific revolution ends demonological. Insufficient evidence to say misfortune towards the supernatural. Decline of torture: shift form punishing the body the mind (cid:498)after 1750(cid:499) The mob still had a role in public opinion. Dangers of the old order: social disorder, misinterpretation, blame reversed, martyr or hero, executioners guilt, confused horror, spreads of the scaffold. The birth of the prison: punishment is no longer visible, no glory, the state appeared as the guilty party in the public punishments.
