Oct 23: lead up to texas war, expansion of us into what is now texas, mexican gave titles of land for 10 years to americans in the north settlement because fear of british coming down. Had to be catholic, of good character, obey mexican laws, bring wife/children. Allowed up to 600 acres: slavery causes contention; mexicans abolished it, still happening in us. [did allow domestic servants: because so many of them were americans, they began functioning as though they were still in us. Almost genocidal - pushed onto reserve systems: texas a big part of this, era of mexican-american war, 1845 - president of us intends to take texas and westward. Want to buy the states initially, but mexico refused. Simultaneously sent their war ships down around the gulf: 1846 - negotiations fail. Clashes begin along the rio grande, what is now the boarder between us and mexican troops.
