HROB 2090 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Absenteeism, Job Satisfaction
Document Summary
A key work attitude discussed in your textbook is job satisfaction. As you read, various factors, such as other attitudes (fairness perceptions, commitment), type of work, personality etc. can impact one"s levels of job satisfaction. I would like to focus on the consequences of job dissatisfaction. Exit-voice-loyalty-neglect framework is helpful in understanding the consequences of dissatisfaction. The table below illustrates this framework"s four responses, which differ along two dimensions: constructive/destructive and active/passive. Exit: the exit response direct behaviour toward leaving the organization, including finding a new position and resigning. Voice: the voice response includes actively and constructively attempting to improve conditions, including suggesting improvements, discussing problems with superiors, and undertaking some forms of union activities. Loyalty: the loyalty responses means passively but optimistically waiting for conditions to improve, including speaking up for the organization in face of external criticism and trusting the organization and its management to do the right thing.
