Document Summary

Geographic and historic circumstances may differ from different time periods, but we can learn from the achievements and problems of past planners and the form and function of the communities they designed. Six important issues began recurring since humankind began designing communities: need to be addressed either when building a whole new community or expanding/refining an existing one. How will it fit with its natural environment: the function (or purpose) of the community. Is it to provide protection, facilitate commerce, act as a political or religious focal point: the form of the community. What are the aspirations of the populace, the aesthetic considerations of the culture, the functional needs to be served: the allocation of land uses. Where will the people live, do business, govern, worship, congregate for public activities: the need for connection. How will people and goods circulate and be exchanged among various land uses: accommodating growth and change.
