MICR 3330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Harald Zur Hausen, Papillomaviridae, Sexually Transmitted Infection
Document Summary
Papillomaviridae: a group of small dna viruses associated with human cancer. Harald zur hausen: discovered the role of papillomaviridae. Luc monyagnier and francoise barre-sinoussi: first to discovered hiv. 72 capsomers (pentamers, each contains 5 l1 proteins, 360 proteins in total) Viral dna packaged with cellular histones and exists as mini chromosome. Previously grouped with polyomaviruses in the now extinct papovaviridae circular dsdna genome of ~8 kbp. Keratinous carcinomas due to infection of papillomavirus. The first mammalian model of cancer caused by virus. Complete genomes of 178 types of hpv have been sequenced. Only cause local and not systemic infections (no viremia) Benign warts at specific sites (skin, mucosa, larynx, etc. ) depending on the type of the virus and the tissue infected. Some types are known to cause cervical carcinoma, a sexually transmitted disease and a major cause of cancers in women. May cause other ano-gential cancers in men and women. Cause cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and tonsil.
