Fungus cant break open cells, they must grow between them: in the appoplast. Not that common for species to just do this. Hyphae produce small short branch that can penetrate a small. It penetrates carefully and once inside it invaginates (pushes in) into the plant. Necrotroph pushes in, doesn"t care what it does. Biotroph goes slowly and carefully trying not to hurt it. When it penetrates the hostoria balloons out. Sheath where the cell wall has been wounded the cell makes more cell wall to seal itself off from the appoplast. Allows for much closer contact between hyphae and cytoplasm of the cell. Membrane of plant cell, then matrix (liquidy solution), then fungal hostorium. Increases the surface area of the fungus hostorium. Brown rust basidomyete, biotroph causes brown rust, singke infected leaf if you took all the hyphae out you would have one meter of hyphae and 10^4 hostoris, approximately 1. 5 hostoria for every leaf cell.
