Kecak indonesian exoticism composed/choreographed for tourist entertainment. Claude debussy used a lot of indonesian musical ideas in his compositions (eg gamelan"s pentatonic scales) exhibited at 1889 paris world fair; this is where debussy experienced gamelan music for the first time. Simple melodies based upon particular scales w/ particular tunings. Bali gets an airport in the 30s = more tourism. Members of the culture can distinguish bw authentic and constructed performances. Indonesian popular music: influences: gambus: instrument (stringed; similar to the oud) replaced by the oud following. Indonesian language is used + metric section that incl. interlocking rhythm.
