28 views1 pages

Document Summary

Transcription: the writing down of music in some sort of graphical way, different than composition, which is written down first. Writing down music can be quite separate from the conceptualization of music in other cultures. This is what ethnomusicology is trying to do. Transcriptions were originally the way of researching other culture"s music. Distance from actual sound to something you"ve written down. Figuring out what is important and what isn"t. When you write in western style transcription, you are assuming pitch is the most important feature of music. Omaha research people wrote in what they though the pitch should be but not what it was. Used these notes to understand other factors that is beyond our writing system. Used to transcribe music that doesn"t fit our system. Speed tempo up or slow it down, duration that is short or long. Adopted because there was a discrepancy in research. Prescriptive: aims to write something so it can be reproduced by another.
