Louis armstrong changed jazz with a number of innovations. He had a long and lasting career as a performer. Known for his large range and big sound. He always saw himself as an entertainer as opposed to an artiste. He is the single most important figure in the development of jazz. His ascension in the 1920s transformed the social music of new orleans into an art that (cid:862)had the pote(cid:374)tial (cid:272)apa(cid:272)it(cid:455) to (cid:272)o(cid:373)pete (cid:449)ith the highest order of previously known (cid:373)usi(cid:272)al e(cid:454)pressio(cid:374),(cid:863) a(cid:272)(cid:272)ordi(cid:374)g to gu(cid:374)ther (cid:272)huller. He is the only major figure in western music to influence the music of his era equally as an instrumentalist and a singer. One of the most beloved musicians of the 20th century: conveyed the feeling and pleasure of jazz to audiences throughout the world. He was raised in poverty and racial segregation but was able to present his music in a generous way that exhilarated new listeners.
