Musc*2150 unit 12: the quest for authenticity - Rise of two underground music scenes from the margins to the mainstream over the course of the 1980s. Heavy metal emerges from the fringe and gives birth to the great hair bands of the decade. Rap moves from the street party to the studio in the same period. Both genres, along with new wave and punk, combine to create the alternative music of the early 1990s. Objectives: discuss the development of heavy metal and aurally identify its elements in a song, discuss the development of hip-hop culture and rap and aurally identify elements of rap in a song. Diverse genre with many sub-types: thrash, speed, black, white, death. Features: very loud, dominated by distorted guitars.
