This unit traces the rock genres that developed out of the psychedelic, hippie-influenced music of the 1960s. Music in the 1970s remains divided along colour lines: white artists dominate these genres, just as black artists dominate those in the next unit. Rock, even more than in previous decades, becomes more and more symbolic of male power and virility. The technology that allows the electronic manipulation of sound becomes more compact and affordable through the 1970s, which allows more experimentation with new instruments and effects by more artists. Covach explores the most common effects and instruments. The 1970s was a difficult economic time for most western nations. The u. s. was already reeling from the oil crisis of 1973: an embargo on oil shipments to the u. s. by the arab members of opec. The embargo was laid in response to the u. s. re-supplying israel"s military during the yom kippur war that same year.
