The song is a ballad (british ballad tradition), folk ballad, old time music , of the european influence, strophic, series of verses telling a story, estimated to have made it to north america by the 18th century. Pleasure gardens- first one in american was in charleston nyc (originated in europe, england) Ole zip coon- also known as turkey in the straw. Ethiopian song, verse-chorus form, structurally strophic, melody is related to irish or scottish song. Foster was making music at a time when the piano industry was expanding and songs were more frequently being printed as sheet music which allowed for his songs to spread. This song became popular again after world war 2 when many swing dance bands performed it on the popular hit radio show the song is reminiscent of thomas moore parlour song.
