Verticle sleeve gatronemy (covered by ohip: some of the stomach is removed. Compared mortality over a 7 year period of people who underwent gastric bypass surgery, and obese people. Gastric bypass surgery reduced mortality by 40: 56% reduction in cvd related deaths, 92% reduction in t2d related deaths, 60% reduction in cancer related mortality. Among patients with bmi <45, 28% reduced mortality. Dramatic decrease in body weight during first year post surgery: some weight regained over 10 years, but never reached pre-surgery weight. Dramatic decrease in fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, and insulin, and more hdl (good cholesterol: corresponding decrease in the incidence of type 2 diabetes and hypertension. More than 80% of obese diabetic individuals achieved t2d remission. No need for insulin 2 days after surgery. The longer they had diabetes before, the worse the outcome will be. Hypothesis: initial/short-term improvements due to caloric restriction, long term improvements due to altered adipokine secretion. Altering ratio of anti:pro inflammatory. (more anti)
